Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, most notably the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

This news arrives less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

In the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including various looks for her US tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
