The British tennis star earned the most important success of his career by coming back from a early deficit to beat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had previously defeated Alcaraz on two separate matches, this victory represents Norrie's first ever victory over a current world number one.

Norrie, ranked No 31, also stopped Alcaraz's supreme streak of nine straight final appearances and 17 consecutive elite tournament successes, which represented the finest stretch of results in the Spanish star's developing career.

The top seed seemed to be progressing easily to a win in the beginning as he eased through the first set. Yet, the British contender steadily battled back into contention by serving with greater precision and dragging the Spanish opponent into lengthy, demanding rallies. His relentless shot tolerance and dependability gradually took its toll.

For much of the match, Alcaraz served well but he struggled badly to locate his rhythm off his groundstrokes.
