The Details Known About the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the death toll is 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.

The victims have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the victims who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, a senior official said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
