The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode series created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The last season concluded in recent years with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating for some time, but official word only came recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a offender.

Yet, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, plot details suggested.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
