Both Friendship and Tigger Moth departed Isla Mujeres, Mexico on the 20th of March.

A comprehensive search and rescue effort is presently ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for a pair of lost sailboats transporting aid cargo en route from Mexico to Cuba.

Maritime Search and Rescue Efforts Initiated

Authorities in Mexico has dispatched naval assets and military search aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board no fewer than 9 sailors, as stated by a official statement.

The ships had been projected to reach Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their docking, the navy said.

Context of Relief to Cuba

Cuba has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the country struggles through widespread national electricity failures.

"Both skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are outfitted with proper safety equipment and communication devices," a representative for the convoy said.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.

"We are working closely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.

Previous Relief Shipment

Earlier in the week, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and warmly received a separate vessel that had carried 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the island.

That ship, called "a new Granma" in reference to the vessel in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, carried solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, bikes and foodstuffs.

Larger International Context

Charity groups and individuals have primarily led initiatives to deliver critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation began.

The United Nations have since highlighted ""severe" shortages of supplies, with in excess of 50,000 surgeries postponed in Cuba due to energy rationing.

Diplomatic pressure have intensified in recent months, with remarks from different officials highlighting the delicate situation regarding bilateral relations.

Reacting to certain proposals, a senior government figure insisted that "the political system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Accounts suggest that early stages of talks had begun, although their present status remains uncertain.

The naval forces said it was committed to using every available asset at its command to find the vessels and guarantee the well-being of the people on board.

To date, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban government.
